       One of the most significant pre-wedding ceremonies is the Roka, which marks the official announcement of a couple’s commitment to each other. It holds a special place in the hearts of families as it signifies the beginning of a new journey toward marriage. 

      The Roka ceremony is often regarded as the formal engagement ceremony, though it typically occurs before the engagement itself. It symbolizes the initial step in the marriage process, where both families come together to bless the couple and give their consent for the union. The word “Roka” is derived from the Hindi word “rokna,” meaning “to stop” or “to block,” symbolizing the sealing of the commitment between the couple.

        During this ceremony, the families of the bride and groom exchange gifts, sweets, and blessings. It is an intimate event that usually takes place at the bride’s or groom’s home, often with close family members present. Different traditions are followed in different regions and families. 

    Shopping list for the Roka Ceremony:

1. Sweets for the bride/groom side.
2. Fruits baskets for the groom side.
3. Sagan envelopes for the bride and the groom.
4. Sagan envelopes for the groom’s family.
5. Tika and Tilak set if required.
6. A heavy Dupatta for the bride if “Chunni Odhai” is to be done.
7. Jewellery for the bride.
